How to Transfer Your Domain

How to transfer your domain to or from FMG.

FMG Domain Transfer Overview

Here is an overview of how domain transfers are managed at FMG. Existing FMG subscribers with accounts in good standing and a domain in our corporate registrar account are automatically renewed each year before their expiration date.

In this article, we'll cover:

Transferring a Domain to FMG

  1. Check if your domain is eligible for transfer

Before you start the transfer process, please ensure your domain is eligible for transfer. You can do this by checking the domain's status, expiration date (minimum 15 days prior to expiration), and lock status at the current registrar. If the domain is not directly owned, you will need to request action from whoever owns it, and they will need to prepare and complete the steps for transfer.

Please note: Domains must be registered for at least 60 days before a transfer can be requested, and it must be at least 60 days from the domain's last transfer completion.

  2. Prepare your domain for transfer

Unlock your domain, disable privacy protection, and obtain the authorization code from your current registrar. Provide the authorization code to FMG Service (service@fmgsuite.com)

Most domains have custom DNS records or other services functioning on your domain - (blogs, VPN, remote access, email, calendars, etc.) FMG attempts to make a copy of existing DNS, including mail records, prior to transfer initiation. However, not all records appear when we search the DNS Zone. If you have any custom-required records, please provide a complete text copy or export file of your DNS zone with the authorization code. This copy of the DNS Zone should be in copy/pasteable text form, complete, and not an image or screenshot (you should be able to highlight the records individually and copy/paste them). You can often request this export/text copy of the DNS Zone from your existing domain registrar support or domain provider support.

  3. FMG will request the transfer using the domain name and authorization code provided by you

  4. Confirm the transfer

After FMG requests the transfer, you (or the current owner of the domain) will receive an email to whatever address is on file at the current registrar asking you to confirm/approve the transfer. Follow the instructions in the email to confirm/approve the transfer.

  5. Wait for the transfer to complete

Once you confirm the transfer, FMG will initiate the transfer process. The transfer process can take anywhere from a few hours to 10 business days to complete.

After the transfer is complete, you may receive an email from your new registrar confirming the transfer.

  6. FMG will update your DNS settings

After the transfer is complete, FMG will update your DNS settings to point to our hosting.

Exceptions to this Transfer to FMG process

  1. The domain is currently owned by Broadridge

To inform Emerald/Broadridge of your intention to have the domain released into your control, please contact them here

Please note that this process can take up to 30 days and should be started as early as possible. They will send you confirmation of release and a transfer authorization code, which may be in multiple emails and possibly from Emerald/Broadridge and/or Network Solutions (or another registrar). Once you have received notification of the release of the Domain, you can then provide the transfer authorization code to FMG, who will request the transfer.

  2. The domain is currently registered at GoDaddy

If the domain is currently registered at GoDaddy, an internal GoDaddy Process is required by GoDaddy to be followed, which can be found here.

Please note that domains transferred to another GoDaddy account will keep all existing DNS settings, but any connected products, such as a website or email, do not transfer with the domain. The information you will need to transfer the domain internally at GoDaddy to our account is:

Note: Domains must be registered for at least 60 days before a transfer can be requested and at least 60 days from the domain's last transfer completion.

  1. Service will request the release of the domain.

  2. FMG will unlock the domain (which also removes domain automatic renewal) and provide you with the transfer authorization code.

  3. The authorization code can be taken to any registrar and used there. FMG will only provide a complete copy of the current DNS zone at the time of domain transfer out, if specifically requested in advance.

Please note: If the domain does not complete the transfer before the domain's annual renewal date, the domain may be lost. We are not responsible for domains no longer registered in FMG's corporate account.

Exceptions to this Transfer Out of FMG process

The domain is currently registered in FMG's Corporate GoDaddy account

If the domain is currently registered at GoDaddy, an internal GoDaddy Process is required by GoDaddy to be followed, which can be found here. FMG service will need the GoDaddy Customer ID and the email address associated with that GoDaddy Customer ID placed in the domain project to initiate the internal transfer process.
