Can I use my VoIP number?

It depends on whether your VoIP provider can release your SPID or NNID

Sometimes — the answer depends on your VoIP provider. Follow these steps to find out.

How Do I Check If My VoIP Number Can Be Used?

  1. Contact your VoIP provider and ask if the SPID or NNID can be released on your line.
    • You may need to ask for the department that handles SMS/MMS, text messaging, or Hosted SMS. Clarify that this only applies to the texting/SMS portion of the line — all other features should stay as they are.
    • Your current carrier may need to move or port your line to a different underlying carrier that's able to release the SPID.
    • They may provide a confirmation code or Letter of Authorization (LOA) confirming the SPID or NNID release. Send this LOA to our Client Experience team, who will pass it to our carrier to set up Hosted SMS.
  2. If your carrier is unable to release the SPID/NNID after exhausting these options, we're unable to use that VoIP number.
  3. If they are able to release it, email us at support@myrepchat.com once you've received confirmation. We can't start the process on our end until the SPID/NNID has been released.

    Note:

    • This will not affect the voice services provided by your current provider — we only use the number's texting capabilities.
    • If your voice provider changes, it will likely interrupt texting. See What if I change my phone carrier/voice provider? (Hosted SMS) for details.
    • If your current provider can't release the SPID/NNID but you'd still like to use the number, we can host it completely — the entire number would be managed by us, and you'd no longer be a customer of your current provider for that line. If you later decide to leave your voice provider, see the carrier changes article above for what to expect.
